Valve Selection Guide

Practical valve selection support for process piping applications

Step 2 of 5Service Conditions

Service Conditions

Service, fluid, pressure and temperature drive material class, ASME B16.5 P-T rating and special checks.

Process service category — drives material and special-service rules.

Liquid, gas, two-phase or slurry — affects valve type and trim.

B16.5

Maximum pressure the valve must contain at design temperature.

Use the more severe of upset or minimum design temperature.

Normal steady-state operating pressure.

Normal steady-state operating temperature.

Continuous, intermittent, static (ready-to-flow), pulsating, etc.

Plant environment — affects coatings, materials and actuator selection.

Free-text engineering note carried into the datasheet.

Use design, not operating

Always rate the valve at design pressure and the more severe of design or upset temperature.

ASME B16.5 caution

ASME B16.5 Caution: Design pressure (40 barg) is within 15% of the 300# Group 1.1 - Carbon Steel screening limit (44.2 barg at 120 deg C). Confirm final P-T rating against ASME B16.5 Table 2-1.1.

ASME B16.5

Pressure-temperature ratings for flanges and flanged valves.

ASME B16.34

P-T ratings for flanged, threaded & welded valves.
